What is nerve entrapment?

Nerve entrapment, usually referred to as a pinched or compressed nerve, is a condition that places pressure on your nerve. Pressure can be placed by inflammation, irritation, or swelling of tissues surrounding the nerve. This traps the nerve and prevents it from moving and functioning properly.

Often the result of repetitive movements, this condition can cause long-term nerve damage as it rubs against bones and tendons. Symptoms include weakness, tingling, numbness, and pain.

What is hydrodissection?

Hydrodissection is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure that involves an ultrasound-guided, high-pressure injection of saline into the area of the entrapped nerve. This creates space around the nerve, separating it from the surrounding tissues, and relieving the pressure that is causing pain.

In many cases, this can bring immediate relief of pain. In most cases, the end result is the same as with surgical release, without the risks of surgery.

What does the hydrodissection procedure entail?

Initially, you have a consultation with Dr. Kulick. He takes the time to understand your health history and the underlying causes of your pain. He performs a thorough physical exam and develops a plan of care to relieve your pain.

On the day of your procedure, you receive a local anesthetic. Dr. Kulick uses an ultrasound machine to visualize the area of nerve entrapment and to guide the saline injection. Using ultrasound-guidance ensures accuracy and increased effectiveness of the treatment.

The procedure itself takes 30-40 minutes to complete. There is no recovery time needed, and no incisions or scars.

What conditions can be treated with hydrodissection?

Conditions caused by compression of nerves can benefit from this procedure, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: causes wrist and forearm pain
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome: causes elbow, hand, and finger pain
  • Sural nerve entrapment: causes pain in the calf of the leg
  • Saphenous and peroneal nerve entrapment: causes pain in the leg
  • Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve entrapment: causes pain in the upper leg
  • Pudendal nerve neuralgia: causes pelvic floor pain and pain in the genitals

As part of your initial consultation, Dr. Kulick discusses if hydrodissection could be an option for relief of your nerve-related pain.
