Head and neck pain may inflict severe discomfort limiting your daily activities.  The cervical spine is composed of seven vertebrae held together and supported by a complex system of ligaments, tendons and muscles.  The vertebrae and discs allow the neck a full range of motion. Neck pain may result from any disruption of its vertebrae, discs, muscles, tendons or ligaments.  Poor posture, osteoarthritis, muscle spasms, nerve entrapment, degenerative disc disease as well as age and occupation can factor into neck pain. At the Center for Integrated Pain Management personalized treatment plans are designed to give the patient optimal health and pain relief from minor to major neck pain and injuries.  Below is a list of Neck and Head conditions that are treated:

  • Cervical Radiculopathy
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Whiplash
  • Facet Joint Syndrome
  • Cervical Sprains, Strains and Tears
  • Peripheral Neuralgia
  • Migraine Headache
  • Tensions Headache
  • Neck Spondylolisthesis
  • Occipital Neuralgia
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Nerve Entrapment/Radiculopathy

A diagnosis will be made once Dr. Kulick reviews your family history, completes a thorough physical examination and conducts an in-office ultrasound. If necessary, Dr. Kulick may request that you obtain an MRI, a CT Scan or additional X-rays in order to determine the diagnosis and treatment plan.

What are some common causes of head and neck pain?

Your neck runs from your upper torso to your head and features a complex network of vertebrae, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These structures are tough and hardworking, but they aren’t invincible.

Head and neck pain occur for a variety of reasons. At his practice, Dr. Kulick regularly diagnoses and treats head and neck pain caused by:

  • Poor posture
  • Automobile accidents
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Playing sports
  • Migraines
  • Tension headaches
  • Cluster headaches

Dr. Kulick also treats head and neck pain caused by musculoskeletal conditions like herniated discs and spinal stenosis.

When should I see a doctor about head and neck pain?

Most cases of head and neck pain subside on their own with rest and conservative measures of care, such as light stretching or applying an ice pack.

If your pain lasts for more than a week or it begins to interfere with work or other activities, make an appointment with Dr. Kulick as soon as possible.

How are head and neck pain diagnosed?

To diagnose head and neck pain, Dr. Kulick performs a physical exam, reviews your medical history, and asks you questions about your symptoms.

If these measures don’t provide adequate insights, he might also order X-rays, blood tests, or MRI scans. These screening procedures can rule out certain health problems and help Dr. Kulick make a diagnosis.

After pinpointing the source of your discomfort, Dr. Kulick develops a treatment plan that aligns with your individual needs.

How are head and neck pain treated?

Whenever possible, Dr. Kulick recommends conservative, noninvasive measures to treat head and neck pain.

For example, he might recommend a series of light exercises to promote circulation and ease swelling. You might also benefit from ice and heat therapy, or over-the-counter painkillers.

For more serious cases of head and neck pain, corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, or a neck collar may be necessary. In rare instances, Dr. Kulick might recommend surgical intervention.
